New from MazeMusic in 2020-21

New for Christmas

The Gift on the Living by Janet Wheeler

A lively setting of a text from Carmina Gadelica suitable for Advent and Christmas.

Duration: 4’30”

New anthem

Hale Sterne Superne by Sarah Cattley

Hale Sterne Superne is a setting of three verses from a Scots poem in praise of Mary by William Dunbar. The piece was a commission for a virtual assumption evensong in summer 2020, put together by present company (Beatrix Swanson Scott and Morgan Edward Overton). The poem has a fantastic lilting rhythm, and this setting has no divisi, making it suitable for smaller ensembles.

New piano duet version

The Ceaseless Round of Circling Planets by Janet Wheeler

Originally written in 2016 for the Thaxted Festival, The Ceaseless Round of Circling Planets is a 20 min work for choir, orchestra and solo waterphone. A new piano duet reduction of the orchestral accompaniment (still with waterphone) was due to be premièred by Enfield Choral Society and Mark Sproson in April 2020 when Lockdown struck.

Listen to part of movement 3 from the 2016 première – with unearthly waterphone sounds, Orlando Gibbons’ hymn Eternal ruler of the ceaseless round and a nod to Holst.

New recordings

Two of Sarah’s pieces, Sicut Cervus and Song of Hope, will appear on a new CD by Caritas Chamber Choir under their director Benedict Preece.

Crossing the Bar: Music for Reflection and Hope is due to be released this autumn under the Ulysses Arts label. This will be the third Caritas disc to feature Sarah’s music since she was the choir’s Composer of the Year in 2017.

Janet’s piece The Christmas Life has been recorded by Choros and Janet Lincé as part of their CD: A sense of Advent.
